A trans woman anarchist is facing persecution from the British state for defending counter protesters at a transphobic speaking event at speakers corner in Hyde Park. The event, organised by a group of trans exclusionary radical feminists (TERFs), billed as a ‘debate’ of the Gender Recognition Act was in fact a campaign meeting seeking to repeal some trans inclusionary provisions within the act.
If convicted the woman faces a a maximum sentence of unlimited fine and/or 6 months in a male prison. Prison time is particularly serious concern, as male prisons are notoriously hostile to transwomen. There have been at least four recorded deaths of transwomen in recent years.
A solidarity demonstration has been called for Thursday the 15th of February outside Westminster Magistrates Court to coincide with the she wolf’s first court appearance. Organisers have advised attendees to protect their identities by wearing neutral clothing and covering their faces. Trans exclusionary activists have a practice of filming and photographing trans and non binary people and finding their personal details in order to out them to their families and workplaces.
TERF activists have organised a demonstration for the day to further harass and demonise trans and other femme non binary folk, and will be probably organise for the trial itself. This is why it is vital that the demonstrations at both the plea hearing and trial are as big and as lively as possible.
The solidarity demo will meet at 9.30am on Thursday 15th February at Westminster Magistrates Court, 181 Marylebone Rd, Marylebone, London NW1 5BR.
