The Criminal Court of Rio de Janeiro sentenced 23 people to imprisonment for partaking in protests against FIFA World Cup. The World Cup was held in Brasil in 2014. Prior to the games, Brasil experienced a wave of largely grassroot protests, which culminated in a popular uprising in June 2013.
The sentences for rioting, gang membership, criminal damage, possession of explosives, “criminal association”, “corruption of minors” and others range from 5 to 7 years.
All 23 were persecuted by the Delegation of Repressão a Crimes de Informática: the political police set up with a purpose of fighting dissent to the World Cup 2014 and the Olympic games held in the country in 2016.
The sentences follow a lengthy 3 years investigation and a trial, during which, according to CrimethInc website, the police investigation was so absurd that at some point they have listed as suspect Mikhail Bakunin, who, sadly, happens to be dead for well over a century.
The 23 prisoners are:
• Elisa Quadros Pinto Sanzi, sentenced to 7 years in prison
• Luiz Carlos Rendeiro Júnior, sentenced to 7 years in prison
• Gabriel da Silva Marinho, sentenced to 5 years and 10 months in prison
• Karlayne Moraes da Silva Pinheiro, sentenced to 7 years in prison
• Eloisa Samy Santiago, sentenced to 7 years in prison
• Igor Mendes da Silva, sentenced to 7 years in prison
• Camila Aparecida Rodrigues Jordan, sentenced to 7 years in prison
• Igor Pereira D’Icarahy, sentenced to 7 years in prison
• Drean Moraes de Moura, sentenced to 5 years and 10 months in prison
• Shirlene Feitoza da Fonseca, sentenced to 5 years and 10 months in prison
• Leonardo Fortini Baroni, sentenced to 7 years in prison
• Emerson Raphael Oliveira da Fonseca, sentenced to 7 years in prison
• Rafael Rêgo Barros Caruso, sentenced to 7 years in prison
• Filipe Proença de Carvalho Moraes, sentenced to 7 years in prison
• Pedro Guilherme Mascarenhas Freire, sentenced to 7 years in prison
• Felipe Frieb de Carvalho, sentenced to 7 years in prison
• Pedro Brandão Maia, sentenced to 7 years in prison
